Having its premiere by the New York Philharmonic within a week of the 2nd aniversary of the September 11th attack, Symphony No. 3 reflects on the event from a perhaps unusual perspective--one looking beyond the ruins and loss to celebrate the immortal creative spirit which survived the destruction of that day. Hartke's symphony was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, Lorin Maazel, Music Director, with the generous support of Marie-Josee and Henry Kravis and is dedicated to the Hilliard Ensemble, who both premiered and recorded the work (New World Records 80648-2).
